The Service
London Deanery launched its Mentoring service in May 2008.
The service offers accredited Mentors to work with doctors and dentists whilst in training or at other transitional times in their careers. In 2010 the service was renamed ‘Coaching and Mentoring’ to emphasise the importance of maximising career potential and professional performance through personal development facilitated by the service.
The mission of London Deanery is to improve the quality of patient care through excellence in the education of doctors and dentists. A coaching and mentoring service is key to delivering this vision since it provides the support and guidance to enable the mentee to drive change in order to fulfil their potential as a future leader in the NHS. The service provides insight for those facing decisions or going through a change. This helps to prevent ‘burn out’ and release their career potential in the health care system.
The London Deanery Coaching and Mentoring service is unique in that all the Mentors must have a teaching role. As teachers they bring their expertise to coaching and mentoring. The training given to them also provides skills that in turn benefit their students and trainees as well as their Mentees. In addition, these skills strengthen their team working, which leads to benefits for their organisation.
The benefits of coaching and mentoring are significant and stretch far beyond the mentor/mentee relationship.
